Item: 1697 William III Silver Shilling Exeter Details: A scarce 1697 sterling silver shilling from the “Great Recoinage” of 1696 – 1698, featuring the first laureate bust of King William III and the sought after “E” mintmark for Exeter. Between 1696 and 1698, the Royal Mint undertook the monumental task of replacing England’s worn and clipped hammered silver currency with modern milled coinage. To assist the Tower Mint in London, five provincial mints were established in Bristol, Chester, Exeter, Norwich, and York. This coin bears the distinct “E” mintmark below the King’s bust, identifying it as a product of the Exeter facility. Obverse: Features a draped, laureate portrait of King William III facing right, engraved by James Croker. The Latin legend “GVLIELMVS III DEI GRA” translates to “William III by the Grace of God”. Reverse: Displays the classic crowned cruciform shields representing England, Scotland, France, and Ireland, with the Lion of Nassau at the center. The date “1697” is divided by the top crown. Edge: Features an obliquely milled (reeded) edge, a security measure introduced to prevent the common practice of coin clipping. Condition: Circulated. Shipment: Secure Tracked 48 delivery via Royal Mail. JC-C3
