1660-62 Fourpence Groat Charles II Silver Hammered Coin

$48.53 $88.32
Item: 1660-62 Fourpence Groat Charles II Silver Hammered Coin Details: This lot features a well-defined silver fourpence, or groat, from the iconic hammered series of Charles II. Produced between 1660 and 1662, these coins are often described as the “swan song” of the English hammered tradition, as the Royal Mint permanently shifted to machine-milled production shortly thereafter. Obverse: Features the crowned and draped bust of the “Merry Monarch” facing left. Behind the head is the Roman numeral “IIII,” denoting its four-pence value. The Latin legend reads: CAROLVS·II·D·G·MAG·BR·FR·ET·HIB·REX (“Charles II by the Grace of God King of Great Britain, France and Ireland”). Reverse: Displays the Royal Arms on a square topped quartered shield, superimposed over a short cross fourchee. The legend CHRISTO · AVSPICE · REGNO (“I reign under the auspices of Christ”) encircles the design. Mint Mark: Struck with the “Crown” mint mark, identifying it as an early Restoration issue from the Tower Mint in London. Condition and Grading The coin is graded Fine (Good Fine). It exhibits a strong, bold portrait and remarkably clear, legible legends on both sides. While there is even circulation wear on the highest relief points of the crown and the central heraldic shield, the coin maintains excellent eye appeal with a deep, authentic cabinet patina. The flan is well-rounded for a hammered issue, free of the clipping or cracks often found on Tudor or early Stuart silver.   A historic “Third Issue” hammered silver groat (fourpence) struck during the early Restoration reign of King Charles II. Featuring the crowned bust facing left and the traditional quartered shield reverse, this specimen is in a high grade condition and represents the final era of hand-struck coinage in England before the transition to mechanisation. Condition: Circulated. Shipment: Secure Tracked 48 delivery via Royal Mail or Royal Mail Special Delivery (recommended). Please choose shipment to satisfy your protection needs. JC-C5
