The ship which is depicted in the center of the heraldic shield is the Santa Maria - flagship of Christopher Columbus. Above the ship is a resplendent rising sun, evokes both the warmth of the tropical islands and the country's bright future. The shield is supported by a blue marlin and a flamingo, the national bird. Legend: COMMONWEALTH OF THE BAHAMAS 1976.
